Sendero PR-A 167 Ojén-Istán

Route description

The PRA167 Ojén-Istán trail is a rugged area full of Cork oak, Pinsapo, different types of pines, Holm oaks, goats and Golden Eagles.

The route is not particularly long but it is not easy, owing to frequent climbs and descents on the slopes of the Sierra Blanca.

The route starts in the town of Ojén, next to the car park in front of the petrol station. (co-ordinates 36.5653°N, 4.8580°W). There is a signpost at the staircase where the path begins. The path climbs up to a small lane leading to the Casa del Cerezal.

There the path turns left and passes through a tunnel under the main A355 road. ( 36.5727°N, 4.8636°W)

The path follows the course of the Arroyo Almadán. climbing from 500m to 600m and then at (36.5737N, 4.8722W) climbs to the left until it reaches, at a height of 860m (36.5755N, 4.8832W) the wide track leading from the Refugio de Juanar to the Mirador de Juanar.

Once you have enjoyed the view, retrace your steps to the building on your left and at (36.5703N, 4.8891W) take the path on the left. At (36.5729N, 4.8939W) there is a path to the left that will take you to the Cruz de Juanar. But continuing on PRA167 takes you to the Puerto de la Viborilla at a height of 1015m from where you can see the Cruz de Juanar and the Salto del Lobo.

The path now descends to the dry riverbed of the Arroyo de Río Molinos which it follows to the town of Istán.

  • Not much shade. This route is quite difficult, since there are some steep slopes. Make sure you have drinking water, appropriate clothing and footwear and in summer sun protection. Lighting fires is prohibited.
