Route PR-A270 Camino de la Dehesa-Fuente de los Hornaos

Route description

This route that will lead you to the Fuente de los Hornaos, where you will find an ecosystem of humid areas with brambles and reeds.
Along the route you will see the very typical karst formations of these mountains. (Karst is a topography formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves). You willcross pine forests and enjoy beautiful views.

The starting point of the trail is the Viñas Arias de Casarabonela sports complex that is located 1 kilometer from the town center in the direction of El Burgo. The old Roman road that the path follows, known as the Camino de la Dehesa, could be the link from Casarabonela to the Roman road that went from the Guadalhorce Valley to Ronda. It is quite well preserved, in some sections you will walk on the original cobblestone. Along the way you will also find an old calera for the manufacture of lime.

The ascent finishes at a forest track that runs right through the Sierra Prieta mountains. Here you turn left and follow the track for some 7 km. During the walk along the forest track there are fantastic views and several crossroads with the many trails that run through these mountains linking the towns of Casarabonela and Alozaina.

A little further on, at Llano de la Chacha, leave the track and start the descent along a path to the left. You will reach the Fuente de los Hornaos, a spring that provides water almost all year round. Here are rushes, oleanders, apple mint and other plants associated with humid areas.

Follow the path and pass by Tajo del Naranjal, a flat-top peak with impressive vertical walls and a little further on you will pass by Llano Cristóbal where there is a small, quaint refuge surrounded by pine trees planted to repopulate the area. Behind this is an impressive view over the Guadalhorce River Valley and the town of Casarabonela around the ruins of a medieval castle.

Continue the descent until you reach Casarabonela. It is worth stopping to explore its streets. Typical of the town are the hornacitas that are found in numerous streets and the many sources in which to drink and cool off.
