A couple of family memories of May.
When Jean & Jim were babies , May took Jean out of her bassinet & wascarrying her by nightie ties
(tighed at back) down the passage when their mother (Edith) found them,"the baby was crying " was Mays' reason, May would have been very young(she was born 1910 ,Jean & Jim 1911).
May used to tell her siblings when they were having a drink or a swim inthe dam " come this side of the
dam, not the side where the dead sheep is".
The children used to swim in either the big or small dam on the way homefrom school during summer,
they kept clear of the yabbies (some were large, & their nip painful.)
Aunty Jean said "you were very thirsty & drank the dam water ".
School teachers took the school children swimming in Rothackers dam, theboys & girls had to go at separate times, as no bathers were worn.

During the depression Jim used to ride a push bike, selling an instrumentfor making ropes, he travelled around Victoria. He then worked on theSnowy Mountain Scheme building a road to Wodonga , after that
was completed he went to Melbourne to work (worked for Rowntrees for someyears & as children we looked forward to his visit as he always bought abox of sweets). Jim worked & lived in Melbourne
for the rest of his life. As a lot of people who went through thedepression, Jim saved everything, so there was alot of material frompaper- timber to be disposed of when Jim had to go into a nursing home,
following a fall off his roof & suffering a brain haemorrahge.

Jean recalls:
One day on the way to school they decided to put some of their lunch inthe fork of a tree, so they could
eat it on the way home, but when they went to get their lunch , the antshad beaten them to it, so that was
the end of that bright idea.
Another time Ned Forrest asked his neices & nephews if they wanted aride on one of his clysdale horses, Jean climbed on & the horse wouldn'tmove, she was instucted to give a good nudge with her foot, then thehorse bolted straight for the thatched low roofed shed, (Jean had visionsof being headless)then the horse came to a dead stop, in front of theshed- no doubt that ended her horse riding
for awhile.
