Hawker and Hall Family Trees

Notes

Joseph Bullock

Not known to be part of the family but included for future research.

Mildred Alice Barrick

The story of Mildred and her brother George is rather sad, and was provided by Ellen Anne Barrick to Graham George Hawker on 2 May 2001 by email as follows:
"Mildred's story is a sad one indeed. I will have to search through some
more of my papers to see if I can come up with the name of the facility.
The truth is that Lillian left money to both George and Mildred in her will
with the stipulation that they would receive it on their 50th birthdays.
George was about 40 and Mildred was about 32 when Lillian died. Both George
and Mildred pretty much wasted the years waiting to turn 50 and getting
their inheritance. While George used his to buy a meat market, he really
wasn't a good businessman and he soon lost his investment. George took his
own life in 1968 just two month before Tom and I married. Mildred was
younger than George and so her wait was a bit longer and she evidently was
not wise at relationships and Mr. Anderson turned out to want the
inheritance also and when she turned 50 he took it and fled. There were no
children from either of Mildred's marriages. It is a sad scenario for both
of Lillian's children."

Douglas John Leckie

Email received 27 April 2001 from Douglas Leckie provided a great deal of the information on the descendants of Edith Clarke. The email was as follows:
"Dear Graham
My name is Doug Leckie and I recently came across your request for information on your
Tapper relatives in Australia on Genforum.Geneaology. I went to your excellent Hawker website
to find photos of my grandmother, Winifred Cecelia King nee Tapper, Auntie Flo (Florence
Manning nee Tapper) and a ripper photo of a portly baby Ern Tapper, my great uncle.
I can give you quite a bit of info on the Tappers but I'll begin here by outlining how we are
related and let you ask what things you want.
Cecelia Clarke, your grandmother, was the sister of Edith Clarke, my great-grandmother. You
have some good photos of her and their house at Hood Street, St.Kilda. (that house was
knocked down only recently) Edith married Ernest William Tapper in 1902 in Walsall. Ernest
William was originally from Salisbury. Winnifred Cecelia was born in 1903, soon after which
Ernest William went to South Africa with a view to settling the family there. In the next year or
so Edith followed with Win, which seems to have caused a fair amount of sadness in the family
with a very young Eva, Edith and Cecilia's sister, trying to run away with the baby when they
were leaving.
Ernest William and Edith stayed for a while in Cape Town, where their next child, Ernest, was
born but apparently were not happy with race relations there and decided to move on to
Australia. I don't know if they came straight here to Melbourne but they eventually settled in
St.Kilda and lived near the beach. Florence was the final child born.
Ernest William was a bricklayer and worked with a Robert King (Roy) at some stage who lived
in the area. He was eventually to marry Win and they had two children, Joan - my mother, and
Robert James.
Ernest was to marry Dorothy D'Orso Hunter(Poppy). They had no children.
Flo was to marry Cliff Manning. They had three children, Lawrence, Patricia and Christine.
Edith died in 1941, as your records show. Pop(Ernest William) lived on into the 1960's, moving
with his son Ern to Broken Hill - a mining town in outback New South Wales - where they both
worked on the mines. Ern moved back to Melbourne but Pop stayed and was buried up there. I
can only remember meeting Pop once as a little boy- I'm 41.
All of that generation are gone now. Aunty Flo died a couple of years back - I'll have to get the
exact dates, being so close I don't seem to seize the information as readily as when I'm
researching people a hundred years back. Her children are all still alive I'm sure - we are out of
contact.
Joan King married Herbert Crockett Leckie, and they had two children, Douglas John, and
Christopher Andrew. Neither of us are married or have children. Mum's brother Robert has four
children, Jennifer, Stephen, David and Andrew, the latter two being twins. None of them are
married either yet although the twins are engaged.
I grew up hearing stories of relatives in England and getting cards from people like Aunt Eva
and Anne (Celia Anne Haywood). Nana (Winifred) was often in contact as had been her mother
Edith - hence your photos - but never made it back to Walsall. Mum and my brother Chris did
though in 1980 and they stayed with Aunt Eva, meeting Anne and her son Anthony.
Anthony was to subsequently move out to Australia and settle in Queensland - as I'm sure you
know - and they came down to visit us in Melbourne.
Well I'll sign off now and look forward to hearing from you. Any assistance I can provide in your
research will be gladly provided. It was such a surprise to see a familiar name on a
genealogical list, but then to see those photos of the family was quite astonishing.
Regards
Doug"
