Sophia Drew

Email from Gerald Shaw to Graham Hawker 12 September 2008:
"I will review my files to establish  what may be of interest to you, starting
with SOFIA DREW  (my Great Grandmother) who I did meet when I was
a small child. She was living with my Grandparents at that time at Green
Street Lodge, located at the intersection with Roadway No A 438."

Thomas Henry Caswell

Given that William Hawker's step children, surname Caswell, were born in Northumberland, a search was made in the 1881 census for a Caswell in Northumberland. There was only one. He was Thomas Caswell and was living with his two children. No wife appears in the census, so it is possible that Sophia Drew had been his wife and mother of the Caswell children. On this hypothesis she would have married Thomas around 1868, when she was 20 and he was 38. He was born in Daventry. How he met Sophia, where they married and why they went to Newcastle upon Tyne are not clear. There would also be the problem of how Sophia coukd marry William Hawker around 1880 when she had borne Susan Caswell in 1879 and Thomas was still alive. Divorce would not have been so quick. The other problem is that her son William Caswell was living with her and William Hawker and another son William Caswell was with Thomas Caswell. To explain this we would have to assume that the younger William and Suasan J Caswell were illegitimate children of William Hawker and that Sophia had left Thomas Caswell for William Hawker sometime between 1870 and 1877. Alternatively, Sophia had married a different Caswell who had died before 1881. Needs much more investigation.
