Thomas Ellis

1Internet, Email from Leslie Ellis to Graham Hawker, 12 Apr 2002. "I am researching the Ellis Family. Samuel Ellis and Hannah Burridge. I am descended from one of his children. (Harry Ellis, b. Jan, 1863. I have been looking mostly for the generation above Samuel and Hannah. Four of Stephen''s brothers ended up immigrating to the United States and settled in Birmingham Alabama. (Wylam is the actual town name) Hannah was buried in Wylam Alabama herself. The brothers that came here were: Harry Richard b. 7 June 1865 Thomas  b. 1864 William  b. 31 October 1866 Mary b. January 1857 The other siblings that we have are: Stephen, John and George. A daughter of Richard is still living in Wylam and I talked with her briefly by phone. She told me that she didnt know where Stephen and John went but that George had become a minister in England and had married a lady named Jane. Please let me know if you would like to share information with me. Thank you so much for what you have. I have several questions if you dont mind my taking your time. Look forward to hearing from you Leslie Ellis."

2Internet, , 12 Apr 2002. "What I know about the brothers that I have here (as well as Mary,, the sister) for your information. Samuel and the "Alabama" brothers were all miners. They worked in Calstock and in Lamerton. Harry was listed as a copper miner in the 1881 census. The rest were listed as "mine Labourers". I dont know when they actually got to America. But I do know that Harry married in January 1894 to Amelia Jane (Jennie) Bruckshaw (also from England). This marriage was in Iowa, USA. So I know Harry was here by then. I have no idea why they came to Iowa. I do know that they came to Birmingham because of mining opportunities. I am not sure which brother got here first. I dont know when Hannah came either. She is buried here and lived here for quite a while because Richards daughter knew her and said she was a sweet lady. (I am glad because in the picture I sent you, she looks really mean, doesnt she??) Harry was born in January 1863, but I dont have a date. This is from his marriage license. He died in Wylam on July 20, 1928 from miner's asthma. He and Jennie had two children. Albert b nov 28, 1894 d.Nov. 9, 1953.  and Nathaniel Wesley b. Nov 2, 1902 d. June 8, 1948 of colon cancer. Thomas b. 1854 and died in Wylam on Feb 26, 1924 Richard b. June 7, 1865 d. Feb 10, 1938 (m. Elizabeth Ann Martin from England) William b. Oct 31, 1866. I know he is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Wylam AL. I havent found his stone yet and the records burned for that time frame. Mary Ellis b. January 1857 d. June 14, 1933. Was listed as a dressmaker in the 1881 census. (Married a man named "Penney" and then Victor Ray - this from Richard's living daughter. I can confirm the Victor Ray . She was buried "Mary Ray" in plot with Harry, Jennie, and Hannah. Also see http://www.birminghamgenealogy.org/research/Angwin/page049.htm."

Eleanor Stoves

1Internet. "From: "Kathryn A. Gibson" Subject: [B-W] Stoves Family/Gelsenkirchen Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 17:42:17 -0500 Dear Fellow Researchers, I have just discovered that my English ancestors moved to Germany after their marriage in 1854 and had their 14 children there. Their names are William Stoves and Ann Joisce[Joyce} Stoves. The only children's names I know are George Stoves who was born 30 Sep 1870 and Eleanor Ellen Stoves who was born 3 Sep 1861. Apparently the family came to the USA in 1887, but do not know name of ship or where they landed. They settled in the State of Alabama. Is there anyway this information could be found in Germany? Thank you for your attention to the above. Kathryn A. Gibson."

2Internet, . "Eleanor "Ellen" Stoves, b. 3 Sept 1861, in Gilsenkircuen, Prussia, (parents are English), married Thomas Ellis in 1888. Children (all born in Alabama) include: Ester, Alice, Anna, Edith, Clara, and Lillian. The family appears on the census in 1900, 1910, and 1920, in Jefferson County, Alabama. Ellen died 2 Feb 1955. Thomas died 27 Feb 1924. http://www.birminghamgenealogy.org/research/Angwin/page049.htm ANGWIN FUNERAL HOME Records: ELLIS ALLICE 12-14-1918 27 Unknown THOS ELLIS ENG ELLEN STOVES Unknown OAKLAND Cemetery ELLIS ELLEN 02-05-1955 93 Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown ELMWOOD cemetery [The birth year is off by one according to my records, but this must be her. J.D. ELLIS IN BIRMINGHAM BRINGS SORROW TO MANY HEARTS IN ROANOKE WHERE HE HAD RELATIVES The sudden death of Rev. J.D. Ellis in Birmingham last Thursday afternoon was a shock to many friends and admirers in every part of the state. The news was received with special regret in Roanoke, because of the deceased's being brother-in-law to Mr. Jno. W. Radney and Rev. George Stoves. Mr. Radney had just returned from Birmingham this evening, leaving Mr. Ellis well as usual, though his general health had not been good for some time. Brother Stoves and Mrs. Radney went to Birmingham Friday morning. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the First Methodist church and the interment was in Woodlawn cemetery. Many ministers of the gospel and other friends attended the services. Mr. Ellis was barely 40 years of age. He leaves a wife and five children, four of whom are girls. Mrs. Ellis is the sister of Mrs. J.W. Radney and Mrs. George Stoves."
