Solomon Francis Hawker

1Internet, Email from "Sue Veitch" , 31 Oct 2000. "I know nothing further of George Hawker other than he was supposed to be the father of my Solomon Hawker. Solomon was born in Cleeve Hill, Gloucs. in 1817 married Elizabeth Quarrell from Cricklade, Wilts in 1841 and came to Australia in 1857. His children were Pearson, Elizabeth, Percival David William Ann Esther Caroline Albert Andrew Adeline. Fairly distinctive names! He was a stonemason but farmed upon arriving in Aus. The last 4 children were born in Australia. 3 of the children had died before leaving Gloucs. Times must have been hard."

2Internet, , 30 Jul 2001. "George Hawker (stonemason) was the father of Solomon Hawker b 1817 Cleeve Hill, GLCS. My gg grandfather. I believe Lydia Hawker b 1832 is Solomon's sister, she came to Australia on the same ship. I presume their mother (Ann Harper?) died and George remarried Eliza (b 1805, Prescott) and had further children, Ellen 1839, Eli 1841, Daniel 1844 and Eliza in 1845 all born in Southam, GLCS."

George Hawker

1Internet, Posting to RootsWeb Hawker board, 29 Nov 2002. "I know Solomon Francis Hawker's father to be George from his (Solomon's) marriage certificate in 1841. His mother is not mentioned (ggrrr). He married in the Baptist Chapel at Cirencester. Lydia Hawker ( b Cleeve 1832) came to Australia on the same ship as Solomon. She was also a baptist. Her parents were George Hawker and Anne Harper. George & Anne were married in Bishops Cleeve in 1812 so I presume Anne to be Solomon's mother also. There is a big gap between Solomon's birth in 1817 and Lydia's in 1832. The IGI lists the baptism in Bishop's Cleeve of George Hawker in 1792 - parents Charles and Frances. 1851 Census has 58 year old George, stonemason (b Southam) living in Woodmancote married to Eliza with a family ranging from 12 to 6 years old. George is mentioned as a stonemason on some certs and a homeopathic chemist on others! As you can see the information is scattered and a lot of presumptions have been made. George's death cert (I think in 1874) may reveal more." Post was edited on 30 Nov 2005.

Thomas Dadford

1Internet, Email from John Norris , 15 Jan 2001. "Dear Graham Hawker, As an amateur historian currently working on a history of the Brecon & Abergavenny Canal in South Wales I am always on the lookout for information on the Dadford family of canal engineers. Periodically I surf the net, usually without finding anything new. However, today, to my delight I discovered your Hawker-Rock ... web pages, with the mention of Mary Dadford. You may be interested to know (and my apologies if you know already) that you appear to be the great great great great great great grandson of Mary's father Thomas Dadford Senior, who with his sons did great works in the Midlands and South Wales. The sons all died, or emigrated to America and died, all apparently without issue and Mary seems to have been the sole beneficiary under Thomas will, of which I have a copy. Mary and Joseph Rock's children have much the christian names I would expect to see. However, I am surprised there is no Thomas. Also, I have a note of another child, Frances (Mary's mother's christian name), born in 1809 and baptised at Bloxwich. I can't vouch for the accuracy of this information. If you would like to know more please get in touch. John Norris."
