Sarah Haddon Signed by the said Sarah Haddon as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us both being present at the same time who at her request in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. John W Evans, Solicitor, Walsall Harry Watson, Clerk with Messrs Enoch Evans & Son, Solicitors, Walsall On the eighth day of February 1915 Probate of this will was granted at Lichfield to Thomas Hawker and Francis Ellis the elder the Executors. I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the Original Will. (Sealed with the impressed court seal of The Family Division of the High Court of Justice)." Probate was granted at Lichfield on 8 February 1915 to Thomas Hawker and Francis Ellis. It is puzzling that Sarah referred to Charles Henry. In all other documents I have, the son of Thomas Hawker is referred to as Charles Edward Hawker. Specifically: In a draft Deed of Indemnity relating to the will of Thomas (undated apart from the year 1926) he is referred to as "Charles Edward Hawker of 21 Mount Street Walsall ... Grocer and Provision Merchant" In the Articles of Association of Thomas Hawker and Sons Limited dated 21st April 1921 the list of first directors (being all the sons of Thomas apart from James) includes "Charles Edward Hawker of 98 Green Lane Walsall Grocer and Provision Merchant" However, I note that William Henry Hawker is missing from the transcript of the will. I have referred to the copy from which the transcript was made and I note that it is a (hand-written) certified court copy and not the original. I think a likely explanation is that the court clerk made an error in copying and lost his place at the point of Charles, skipping in error to start again at the Henry of William Henry. This is of course supposition and one would need to get hold of the original will to prove or disprove this hypothesis. However, it seems the most reasonable explanation for the appearance of a (otherwise unknown) Charles Henry and the disappearance of Charles Edward and William Henry.
